Daybreak's John Stapleton recommends new Parkinson's carer guide

Source - Parkinson's UK, 17 June 2011:

"Today we published a new guide endorsed by John Stapleton, offering comprehensive information and support to anyone caring for people living with Parkinson's.

The carer's guide is free to download or order.

We're launching the updated guide during Carers Week. Parkinson's UK is a leading partner of Carers Week 2011.

A carer can be anyone who looks after a family member, partner or friend who, because of health reasons, is in need of regular support. In the majority of cases they are not paid for carrying out this important role for a loved one.

Offering expert information, advice and support

As well as containing information about the general needs of carers of people with Parkinson's, the guide has been developed with the most up to date information to reflect recent political developments.

This includes changes to carers' rights and benefits, as well as professional health and social care help available.

Broadcaster John Stapleton (pictured) cared for his mother who had Parkinson's and dementia for many years. John comments:

"I know from first-hand experience the difficult challenges facing the thousands of people who sacrifice so much to care for someone with Parkinson's.

"I fully support this latest guide from Parkinson's UK as it takes away some of that anxiety by offering expert information, advice and support on all aspects of caring for someone with the condition."

Taking away the islolation of caring

Charlotte Jackson, our Acting Information Resources Manager, adds:

"Suddenly, and often unexpectedly, finding yourself in the position of caring for a loved one with Parkinson's can be a daunting and very stressful experience.

"As the condition progresses, your caring role will change too. Many carers can feel quite isolated if they don't know who to turn to for guidance.

"So our newly-updated guide offers comprehensive expert information and support to anyone who is caring for a partner, relative or friend with Parkinson's.

"We believe that no one should have to face Parkinson's alone - and that includes carers of people with the condition."

We have also updated our Carer's Allowance information sheet this week."
