Welcome to our May news bulletin packed full of news and information. Please feel free to forward this on to any of your friends, relatives or colleagues that you feel might benefit from this information. The Carer Support Team are here to support unpaid carers in Wolverhampton, providing Carers Assessments, information and advice, emotional support and peace of mind though the Carer Emergency Card Scheme and Emergency respite. To find out more contact the team on 01902 553409 or email carer.support@wolverhampton.gov.uk or drop into the centre in Blossoms Fold, Monday to Friday between 9am and 4.30pm.

City Carer - Summer Edition
The new edition of our newsletter will be distributed from mid-May so look out for copies at your local library, GP's surgery, Wolverhampton Art gallery, local information points and of course at the Carer Support Centre. I will be emailing the newsletter to you if you receive this news bulletin by email but if you would like me to send you a copy in the post please contact me with your name and address. If you are an organisation or group and would like to have a few copies available then please let me know how many copies you require and I will get them to you. As always if you have a feedback from the newsletter please email me and comments or complete the feedback form and send it in to the freepost address specified. If there is anything that you would like to see in our newsletter please get in touch with me and I will see what I can do!

Carer's Week Events - 13 June to 19 June
Carers already registered with the Carer Support Team will be sent invitations detailing the events going on over Carers week shortly. The highlight of the week will be a celebratory event being held at the Lighthouse on 14 June. Information promoting the event is also in the May edition of the City carer. NEW Carer Aware e-learning package
The Carer Support Team are pleased to announce the launch of an online training course that has been developed to increase the awareness of carer issues and provide information and signposting to the services that are available to carers in Wolverhampton. The course is flexible as you can dip in and out of it and can also be used as a resource to check for information. Not only is it available for carers to learn about what is available but it has been made available to council staff through their Learning and Development team so that they can become more carer aware. It is being offered to GP's and pharmacies and to any other organisation that may come into contact with carers and therefore need to know how to help and signpost them to help. Learning Disabilities Strategy 2011-2016
Consultation about a news strategy for learning disabilities will be launched shortly. if you are interested please contact Bob Heath, participation officer on 01902 550694 or email bob.heath2@wolverhampton.gov.uk so that he can provide you with details.

Macmillan Cancer Support has launched a unique information service based in libraries across Wolverhampton. The service offers comprehensive information about cancer at the city’s 15 libraries and home library service. Macmillan has worked in partnership with Wolverhampton City Council to create designated areas in selected libraries, which offer free information about cancer including its diagnosis and treatment. As well as books, leaflets and information about the disease, people affected by cancer can find out about help with benefits and grants as well as access to counseling and further support offered by the Welfare Rights Benefits service. Macmillan are particularly keen to include advice and help for carers, friends and relatives.
If you, or someone close to you, is living with or beyond cancer and would like information about cancer and healthy living, Macmillan can offer friendly, informal and confidential support and practical advice. The main information point is at Central Library, Snow Hill, Wolverhampton, WV1 3AX where they provide a confidential appointment service by telephoning 01902 550089
There are also Macmillan Information Points at the following libraries:
• Bilston
• Wednesfield
• Whitmore Reans
• Penn
These information points have lots of free information that you can take away, or read at the library.

BDR Healthcare Consulting Limited or Apple Solutions specialise in supporting people to promote their independent living. Apple Solutions is a membership based business who provide adult outreach and a telephone support services to their members on a 24/7 basis. Membership is based on a yearly subscription. Upon joining it will immediately give you access to them by telephone day or night seven days a week. Every member has access to our outreach services when requested. Examples include Full escort service to medical and any other appointment, Shopping – accompanied or on behalf of, Cleaning, Laundry, Food preparation, Befriending, Small DIY jobs, Gardening. Allotment Plots for People with Disabilities
Allotments in Kent Road in Parkfields are raised plots designed for use by people with mobility problems or wheelchair users. They could also suit people with other disabilities such as severe visual impairment. They are looking for individuals, groups or organisations who might be interested in taking on one of these raised plots to grow vegetables, please contact Anton Emmery on 01902 556031.

Service 500 - Free City Centre Bus - started 5 April
The City Centre Free Bus operates on Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday. The first bus is at 9.40am from Pipers Row. Then Every 20 minutes. Last return service from Market (Pitt Street) leaves at 2.30pm. Modern low floor easy access buses are used on this route. SEN Green Paper consultation Does your child have additional needs? Wolverhampton Parent Partnership service is hosting consultation sessions to seek parental views on the proposals within the government's green paper 'Support and aspiration - a new approach to special education needs and disabilities'. • Thursday 19 May - 7.30pm to 9pm: The Gem Centre, Neachells Lane, Wednesfield, WV11 3PG
Wolves Community trust - tackle diabetes
This is a programme currently being run for people who have been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. The X-pert Diabetes Education Programme is currently being delivered as part of the Tackle Diabetes project and is a 6 week structured education course. Courses are currently being delivered from Molineux Stadium and Blakenhall Healthy Living Centre – the next courses are due to begin in May (spaces still available for Blakenhall).
